Davey Named PGCBL Coach of the Year

By: PGCBL Release

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce that Nick Davey of the Albany Dutchmen has been selected as the 2013 PGCBL Coach of the Year.

Davey guided the Dutchmen to a memorable season in the Capital District which included a franchise record 26 victories, the first playoff appearance in team history and postseason wins over the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs and eventual league champion Amsterdam Mohawks. Albany tied for third place in the highly competitive Eastern Division and the Dutchmen finished in a three-way tie with Glens Falls and Mohawk Valley for the third-most wins in the league. The Dutchmen completed the regular season with a franchise best record of 26-22 (.542).

Twenty-eight of Albany’s 48 regular season games were decided by two runs or less. Davey’s Dutchmen went 17-11 in those games and the team finished the summer with a 19-12 mark in two-run tilts. Albany played 20 one-run games during the regular season and went 13-7. The Dutchmen added a pair of one-run victories over Mohawk Valley and Amsterdam in the playoffs; each game was decided in extra innings. Five of Albany's final seven overall wins came in one-run games. Albany led all PGCBL teams with five walk-off victories at Bob Bellizzi Field. The Dutchmen accomplished a rare feat on June 20 as they won both games of a non-traditional doubleheader against Amsterdam with walk-off hits.

Due to wet weather in the first half of the season, Albany played 30 of its 48 regular season games in July. The Dutchmen played in parts of 13 doubleheaders – those included four non-traditional doubleheaders and nine seven-inning twin bills in which the Dutch posted a 14-12 record. The 13 doubleheaders included a stretch of 35 innings over the final two days of the regular season. Albany won a 16-inning thriller over Glens Falls in the night cap of a non-traditional doubleheader on the final night of the regular season to clinch the last playoff spot in the East. Less than 24 hours later, Nick Davey skippered the Dutchmen to their first playoff win in their first postseason game against Mohawk Valley. Overall, Albany played eight extra inning games between the regular season and playoffs and went 5-3. Two of the eight extra-inning games were 16-inning contests against Glens Falls.

In addition, the Dutchmen posted a 15-14 record against divisional opponents in the East during the regular season and a 13-12 record against PGCBL playoff teams.

The Dutchmen also enjoyed national success. Albany opened the summer with a 9-1 record and that led to the team earning its first national ranking. The Dutchmen were slotted ninth in Perfect Game’s first Summer Top 30 poll of the season. Albany was one of three PGCBL teams ranked in the Top 30 in 2013 along with Amsterdam and Glens Falls.

Albany’s pitching staff ranked third in the league in team earned run average (3.36). Dylan Collett (Keene State) led the league in ERA (1.71) and he finished fourth in strikeouts (47). Albany’s Matthew Dacey (Richmond 2013-14) won the PGCBL’s All-Star Game Home Run Derby. He tied for second in the league with six home runs during the regular season before hitting two more in the playoffs.

Matthew Dacey and James Davitt (Bryant) each won PGCBL weekly awards. Five Dutchmen were selected to compete in the PGCBL All-Star Game – Dylan Collett, Sean Spicer (Baylor), Tyler Orris (Millersville), Anthony Marks (Coastal Carolina) and Zach Remillard (Coastal Carolina).

Davey recently completed his fourth season as the head coach of the Albany Dutchmen. Over the last four years, Davey has compiled 82 regular season victories. Davey has increased Albany’s win total in each of the last four years, from 16 in his inaugural season in 2010 to 18 in 2011, 22 in 2012 and 26 in 2013. He is one of just two head coaches in Albany franchise history.
