Dutchmen Swept in Doubleheader vs AmsterdamBy: Jason Palatsky
The Albany Dutchmen (11-10) were swept by the Amsterdam Mohawks (15-7) in a doubleheader Sunday night. In game 1, the Mohawks used a three run 8th inning to give them the victory 4-2, while in game 2 a two run 4th inning separated them from the Dutchmen and provided the final score of 3-1. In the first game, the teams traded runs in the 2nd inning, as a Dan Maynard (University of Maryland) double scored Nick Patten (University of Delaware) to give the Mohawks a 1-0 lead. The Dutchmen would respond in the bottom half of the inning, as Cole Malloy (Butler University) took a bases loaded walk to score Malcolm Nachmanoff (Stony Brook University). Even though the teams had many opportunities for the remainder of the game, neither could convert and the game went into extra innings, where the teams would make up for the lost runs that were not scored in the previous frames. After Tyler Frank (Florida Atlantic University) started off reaching on a Micah McHugh (University of Mississippi) error and stealing 2nd, he would score off another error from McHugh off the bat of Joe Genord (University of South Florida), to make it a 2-1 game. After Troy Montemayor (Baylor University) got a strikeout and a ground out, Dan Maynard (University of Maryland) singled Genord home from second and moved up on the throw home. Andrew Rouse (Marist College) would then follow with a single of his own to make it a 4-1 game. Rouse would be thrown out at home off a Tyler Ungerland (College of Saint Rose) single to end the top half and give the Mohawks a 4-1 lead. The Dutchmen would look to respond though, as back-to-back leadoff singles from Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican University) and Kyle Skeels (Coastal Carolina) put the tying run at the plate in Nachmanoff, who would fly a ball deep to left field to score Childers and put the tying run on second with no outs. Mike Bonauito (Fairfield University) would then get McHugh to ground out on the grass that held the runners, and struck out both Brent Alford (Augusta Univeristy) and Jack Gethings (Fairfield University) to end the ballgame, 4-2. Nachmanoff led the way for the Dutchmen, going 1-for-2 with his RBI double and a walk. Childers went 1-for-3 with a run, and Skeels and McHugh each went 1-for-3. Jack Grabek (Bucknell University/Guilderland High School graduate) went 4.1 innings strong in the start, allowing only four hits, one run (earned), while walking two and striking out five and facing only one more than the minimum. The Dutchmen would score first in game 2 although, as Alford laced a double down the line in the bottom of the second and Jon Skidmore (Dallas Baptist University) followed with a double of his own to deep left center to score Alford and making it a 1-0 ballgame. Amsterdam would respond quickly though, as in the top of the third Eric Downey (SUNY Brockport) singled and moved up to second off a Chris LaVorgna (Franklin Pierce University) single, and scored on a Nachmanoff error trying to get him at third, tying the game at one. In the top of the 4th, Amsterdam would put runners on second and third with one out, and back-to-back RBI singles from Austin Botello (New Mexico State University) and Rouse, making it a 3-1 game. Albany would have limited opportunities the rest of the way though, as after they put runners on first and second in the bottom of the 4th and a strikeout stranded them, they would put only one runner on base the rest of the way, and the game finished 3-1. Amsterdam has tomorrow off before returning to action Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park to face the Oneonta Outlaws at 6:35. |
