Two Vanderbilt Commits Join Dutchmen

By: Rob Lepelstat

Dutchmen add two Vanderbilt '18 commits to roster for 2018 season.
Currently ranked No. 15 in the country, the Vanderbilt Commodres have established themselves as a clear and consistent powerhouse in the Southeastern Conference. Over the last four seasons, Vanderbilt has also secured a pair of trips to the College World Series Championship, taking home the title in 2014.

The Dutchmen are excited to add two Vanderbilt commits to the organization this summer for the 2018 PGCBL season: RHP Luke Murphy and 1B John Malcom. Both Murphy and Malcolm will head to Albany this summer before joining the Commodores on campus as freshman in the fall.

The organization has had huge success in the past with top recruited high school seniors including Ernie Clement (Virginia), Zach Remillard (Coastal Carolina) and Dom DiCaprio (Rice).
  • Ernie Clement: Virginia, Summer 2014 with Dutchmen, 2017 MLB Draft, 4th Round, Cleveland Indians
  • Zach Remillard: Coastal Carolina, Summer 2015 with Dutchmen, 2016 MLB Draft, 10th Round, Chicago White Sox
  • Dom Dicaprio: Rice, Summer 2015 with Dutchmen, 2016 NCAA All-Regional Team, C-USA All-Freshman Team

Luke Murphy, who was rated a very rare 10/10 perfect rating from Perfect Game, brings huge talent potential to the Dutchmen this summer. Murphy is also ranked the No. 8 overall prospect in Tennessee and the fourth ranked right handed pitcher. As a senior in high school, the 2018 Perfect Game Honorable Mention and righty hurler already clocks in as high as 92 MPH on the radar gun.

During his junior season at East Robertson high school in Springfield, Tennessee, Murphy went 6-2 with a 2.50 ERA, striking out 111 batters and only walking 26 all season. At the plate, he batted .265 with 30 total hits, 28 runs and finished 12-for-18 on stolen base attempts.

Rated the No. 1 overall prospect in Michigan and the No. 46 overall prospect in the 2018 class, the 2017 Perfect Game Underclass First Team selection brings major power potential and a strong athletic build to the Dutchmen roster for summer 2018. Malcom batted .430 from the plate his junior year of high school at Detroit Country Day Upper in Beverly Hills, Michigan.

He's also an above average athlete for the position, with 6.8 speed in the 60-yard dash and quick feet and soft hands around the bag defensively (PerfectGame.org). With Malcom leading the way, Detroit Country advanced to the regional final each of the last three years, taking home the regional title in 2016 before ultimately falling in the State quarterfinal game.

Malcom went 2-3 with 3 RBIs on March 30 to help his team get a 10-9 victory over rival Seaholm. Check out the highlights from one of the top ranked first basemen in the country here: https://twitter.com/athlazon/status/979751046053617667

The Albany Dutchmen are very excited to bring two highly talented and highly recruited Vanderbilt commits to Varsity Field for the 2018 campaign.
