Dutchmen gather around Coach Davey after DH loss at Glens Falls

GLENS FALLS, N.Y.- The Glens Falls Dragons (7-12) returned the favor to the Albany Dutchmen (10-6) by sweeping a doubleheader on Friday evening at East Field in Glens Falls. 

Albany’s comeback attempts in both games fell short. The Dragons held on for 6-5 and 11-7 victories.   

Glens Falls 6, Albany 5

Albany got off to an early lead in the second inning when Nick Estrella (Azusa Pacific) drove in Brandt Holland (North Alabama) and Jon Skidmore (Dallas Baptist) with a two-out double, padding his team lead in RBIs. He ended the doubleheader with three RBIs and 11 on the season.   

The Dutchmen added one in the third thanks to a Chase Allen (Limestone) sacrifice fly to centerfield. That was the only run scored in the inning despite loading the bases with nobody out. 

The Dragons fired back in the bottom of the frame with a vengeance, scoring all six of their runs in the third. With nobody out, Ryan Beamish (Lee) hit a double that cleared the loaded bases to tie the game at three. Glens Falls scored three more two-out runs to take a 6-3 lead.   

Teddy Paisley (Virginia) started for the Dutchmen in the loss; he allowed six runs on five hits. Paisley walked three batters and struck out two in his 2.2 innings of work. Mike Pepio (East Stroudsburg) was perfect in relief. He went the rest of the way without allowing a batter to reach base. This effort extended his blemish-free streak to 6.1 innings, which is statistically his entire body of work with his prior two appearances coming in the two home games suspended due to darkness. 

Albany inched closer with a run in both the fourth and sixth innings. Brad Gneiting (Rice) singled in a run in the fourth and Skidmore scored on an infield error in the sixth. Gneiting had four hits on the day, extending his hit-streak to five games and boosting his average to .349.  

Brandon Budlong (Johnson & Wales) shut the door in the seventh to preserve the win. He went the distance for the Dragons, allowing five runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out six. It was his second consecutive start against the Dutchmen going at least six innings, and he earned his first win of the season. 

Glens Falls 11, Albany 7

The Dutchmen took an early lead again in game two, this time in the first inning as a two-out wild pitch brought in Estrella for the early 1-0 advantage.   

In similar fashion to the first game, Glens Falls answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the first. Four consecutive walks tied the game and set up a bases loaded situation for Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire), who came through with a two-run single to give the Dragons a 3-1 advantage. 

Two runs in the third tied the game at three. Childers, sidelined since June 11^th with an ankle injury, drove in his first run of the season with a double. The next batter, Trace Tyre (Ole Miss), had an RBI groundout to second to tie the game. 

For the second time of the game and third of the day, the Dragons responded with a big inning of their own. Two walks followed by five consecutive base hits in the bottom of the third produced five runs to give Glens Falls the 8-3 advantage. 

Despite allowing just one hit, Thomas Spinelli (Ole Miss) surrendered four earned runs in 2.1 innings and took the loss. Only four out of 13 batters he faced put the ball in play as he allowed six walks and struck out three.  

Tom Taplin (Buffalo) earned his first win of the season for Glens Falls. In four innings on the mound, he allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and two punch-outs. 

Three runs in the sixth inning pulled the Dutchmen within one.  After Estrella hit an RBI single to make it 8-5, him and Gneiting were driven in by a Trace Tyre double.

The hope of a comeback was once again put to rest when the Dragons posted three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.  

Heriberto Casasola (Reinhardt) pitched two innings for the Dragons and got the save, his first of the season. 

With the sweep, the Dutchmen fell out of first place in the East Division of the PGCBL. With a sweep over the Saugerties Stallions, the Amsterdam Mohawks have won seven in a row and now hold a 1.5 game lead over Albany for the division lead. 

Mohawk Valley (10-6) slid into a tie with the Dutchmen with their huge 16-0 win over Oneonta (5-12).

The Dutchmen have a quick turnaround and will be home Saturday for a 5:05 matchup with the Onondaga Flames. Saturday will be CH Evans Brewing Night at the ballpark. Sunday is CDTA Kids in Free Night with a rematch against the Glens Falls Dragons. First pitch again at 5:05.
