June 28th, 2017

ONEONTA, N.Y.- The Albany Dutchmen (12-7) defeated the Oneonta Outlaws (6-16) by the score of 7-5 in the first matchup of the season between the two teams.

Brad Gneiting (Rice) got three hits and drove in two in the Dutchmen victory. He also scored a run in the seventh when the Dutchmen broke the 5-5 deadlock.

Four consecutive singles in the second inning led to the Dutchmen grasping an early 4-0 lead. Griffen Herrera (Azusa Pacific), Peyton Sockwell (North Alabama), and Gneiting all plated runs with their successive base hits.

Brandon Brundage (USC Upstate) brought the Outlaws closer in the third with an RBI double. He scored one batter later on an infield error. Another unearned run in the fourth and a “small-ball” run an inning later tied the game at four.

Tommy Miller (Siena) started for the Dutchmen and went 4.2 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on just two hits, He walked three and struck out four. Sean Boyle (Dallas Baptist) pitched in relief and earned the win, his first of the season. He pitched through the seventh giving up a run on two hits while surrendering three walks and one strikeout.

The teams traded runs in the sixth, each without putting the ball into play. Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican) took the lead back for the Dutchmen when we scored on a passed ball. Oneonta once again tied things up in the bottom half of the inning when Chris Tracz (Marist) scored on a wild pitch.

Tracz and Brundage led the Outlaws offensively in the loss. Tracz had two out of the team’s six hits on the evening, and Brundage had two RBIs.

The Dutchmen used a little “small-ball” of their own when they scored the winning runs in the seventh. A leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt allowed Griffen Herrera (Azusa Pacific) to score the sixth run for the Dutchmen when Gneiting put pressure on the defense, causing an infield error that allowed the run to score.

Trace Tyre (Ole Miss) drove Gneiting in with a single three batters later. It was his eleventh RBI of the season, and his 23rd hit extended his team-lead in the category.

Mac Welsh (Louisville) and Justin Bureau (Ave Maria) held onto the lead, each without surrendering a run in their respective innings of work, to secure the win. They each allowed one hit. Welsh recorded all three outs by way of strikeout.

Bureau ran into some trouble in the ninth but was relieved when a strike ‘em-out, throw ‘em-out double play ended the game when the tying runs were trying to move into scoring position. The save for Bureau was his fourth of the season, placing him in a tie for second in the PGCBL in the category.

The Dutchmen are back in action tomorrow evening in Saugerties for a matchup with the Stallions, first pitch is 7:05 pm. Albany is home against the Outlaws on Saturday for Werner Ladder Night, featuring the Dutchmen mascot’s birthday party. The Dave & Busters Street Team and CSEA Member VIP Night will also highlight the game.
