PGCBL All-Star Festivities Showcase DutchmenBy: Kyle Lancto July 18th, 2017
AMSTERDAM, N.Y.- Five Dutchmen players saw action in the East Division’s 10-8 victory in the PGCBL All-Star Game Tuesday evening at Shuttleworth Park.
Justin Bureau (Ave Maria), Tommy Miller (Siena), and Matt Pierce (Siena) each pitched an inning in the winning effort. In what has become expected for the league-leader in saves, Bureau tossed a perfect third inning, inducing three groundouts.
Miller allowed a hit in his inning of work and faced a bases loaded situation because of an infield error and walk, but he was able to get out of the frame without allowing a run. He struck out two batters in the inning.
Pierce struggled in the fifth inning, allowing six runs on seven hits. He did, however, record strikeouts for all three of his outs. Pierce has had an outstanding campaign thus far in the PGCBL, leading the league in wins with six and second with a 1.45 ERA.
Nick Estrella (Azusa Pacific) and Trace Tyre (Ole Miss) each came off the bench for the East Division squad. Tyre was a late addition to the team, as a result of an injury. He went 0-2 in the game.
Estrella, who is hitting .304 for the Dutchmen on the season, was 1-3 on the night, after entering as a defensive replacement in the fifth inning. He scored one of the East’s seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. That came after the West scored six in the top of the inning, which at the time gave them a 7-3 lead.
In addition to the PGCBL All-Star Game, seven Dutchmen competed in the PGCBL Prospect’s Game. Greg Marino (Stony Brook) was given the honor of being the starting pitcher for the East Division. He tossed a scoreless first inning despite allowing a double and a walk. He had two strikeouts.
Jack Grabek (Bucknell) pitched a perfect fourth inning. He recorded strikeouts for the final two outs of his outing.
Roel Garcia (Rice) and Trace Norkus (North Florida) pitched the seventh and eighth inning, respectfully, to close out the eight-inning contest.
Garcia allowed a run on a hit in the seventh, but also recorded two of his outs by way of strikeout.
Norkus allowed four runs on five hits in the eighth, but was able to stop the bleading, allowing the East Division Prospects to win by the score of 12-9.
Brandt Holland (North Alabama), Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican), and Nick Gallo (Oklahoma State) were the position players representing the Dutchmen in the Prospect’s Game. Holland and Gallo were starters for the East Division.
Both Holland and Gallo reached base safely in the first thanks to a walk and hit by pitch. Gallo later registered a single as part of the East’s nine-run outburst in the sixth. Childers reached base twice off the bench, and scored a run in the sixth.
Gallo, Estrella, Allen, and Childers all competed in the skills challenge between the two games.
The Dutchmen come back from the All-Star break Wednesday at home for a divisional matchup against division-leading Amsterdam Mohawks. First pitch is 5:05 pm. It is Fans Pick the Promo Night at Siena Field. Dutchmen will take requests from the fans through social media and fans in person will decide in-game promotions done throughout the game. |
