Four Siena Freshmen Join Dutchmen for 2019 SeasonBy: Christian De Guzman
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Albany Dutchmen continue to add familiar talent to their 2019 roster by signing four players from nearby Siena College. Outfielders Ryan McGee (Siena) and Nick Melillo (Siena) and pitchers Ben Seiler (Siena) and Nate Toms (Siena) will all feel right at home with Albany at Connors Park, the shared home field of Siena and the Dutchmen.
McGee is a freshman from Schenectady, New York who has appeared in 20 games for Siena this season, starting in 19 of them. A graduate of Colonie Central High School, where he was named an Albany Times Union and Suburban Council Blue Division First Team All-Star his senior year, McGee is batting .243 with 17 hits and seven RBIs so far. “Ryan has solidified himself in the Saints outfield as a young player,” said Dutchmen Head Coach Nick Davey. “He will definitely be someone that matures at the plate with more at-bats.”
Nick Melillo, another freshman from Schenectady, New York has played in 10 games for the Saints, starting in eight of them, and accumulating five hits and five RBIs. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, where he was selected as an Albany Times Union Second Team All-Star and a Suburban Council First Team All-Star his senior year. “Nick is another local product that has seen early action with the Saints,” said Davey. “He’s a very athletic kid who is going to see time all over the outfield for both Siena and us this summer.”
Ben Seiler is a 6’6” left-handed pitcher hometown player from Albany, New York. The freshman has thrown 20 innings in six games for Siena, compiling a 4.05 ERA with 19 strikeouts so far this season. He graduated from Albany Academy where he was named a NYSSWA and Albany Times Union First Team All-Star. Seiler made history by throwing the first perfect game in Albany Academy history during the Class B Semifinals against Voorheesville. “Ben was one of the best local pitchers last year,” said Davey. “He’ll get quality innings for Siena this year because he knows how to pitch. He changes speeds well, throws multiple pitches for strikes, and has a very good mound presence. I look forward to watching him progress throughout the spring and summer at Connors Park.”
Lastly, Nate Toms is another freshman from Albany, New York. The 6’3” freshman right-hander has thrown 2.1 innings in four games so far on the young season. A graduate of Colonie Central High School, Toms was named an Albany Times Union Second Team All-Star and a Suburban Council First Team All-Star his senior season. Toms split time between the mound and first base in high school before switching to a full-time pitcher this season “As Nate matures and keeps gaining experience on the mound, he could be a dominant guy both for Siena and us this summer,” said Davey. “Nate’s upside is tremendous.” Albany starts the 2019 PGCBL season on the road Friday, May 31st at 7:05 p.m. against the Saugerties Stallions. The first home game for the Dutchmen is on Saturday, June 1st at 5:05 p.m. against the Glens Falls Dragons. For ticket information and more, visit dutchmenbaseball.com. |
