Dutchmen Rally to Force Extras but Lose in 11 Innings

The Dutchmen fell in extras to the Amsterdam Mohawks to drop to 3-8.

Tuesday, June 15, the Albany Dutchmen fall to the Amsterdam Mohawks 11-10 in 11 innings. The Dutchmen trailed 8-3 after five innings but battled back to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

The Amsterdam Mohawks opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Bryce Eblin (Alabama) crossed the plate to make it 1-0. The Mohawks would then tack on another run later in the inning when Robbie Armitage (Marist) drove in Brett Coker (Middle Tennessee St) on a single.

The home side would keep on rolling in the next two innings. Adding two more runs in the bottom of the second when Jake Reinisch (Wake Forest) scored on a wild pitch and Eblin drove in Keith Jones (Washington St) on a sac fly. In the third, it was an unearned run that saw CJ Funk (Pittsburgh) score on an error by first baseman Kyle Vinci (Princeton).

The Dutchmen then got on the board with a three run fourth inning highlighted by a Logan Beard (Louisville) rbi double that plated Adam Zebrowski (St. John Fisher). The other two runs were driven in by Jake Defayette (RPI) and Ryan McGee (Siena) on walks to make it 5-3.

That momentum would not last long for Albany as the Mohawks responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Starting with a Matt Shaw (Maryland) 2-run blast before Jones drove in Funk with a single.

That’s when momentum shifted towards the Dutchmen. Down 8-3, the rally started in the seventh inning when Beard drove in Tom Kretzler (Brockport) on a groundball. Vinci then added to the fun with a double that brought in Zebrowski.

It went down to the wire before Albany could tie the game. With two outs in the ninth, down by 3 runs, Isaac Humphrey (Louisville) blasted a 3-run home run to left to tie the game at 8 runs apiece.

It was back and forth in extra innings. The Dutchmen struck first in the top of the tenth on a McGee double that drove in George Rainer (RPI) to make it 9-8, but the lead would not last. In the bottom half of the inning the Mohawks struck back. Kai Roberts (Utah) crossed home plate to tie things up at 9-9.

The following inning, the Dutchmen re-took the lead on an rbi double by Zebrowski that brought Kretzler across home plate to give Albany a 10-9 lead. The Mohawks would then tie and win the game in the bottom half of the inning on a hit by pitch and an infield single to walk it off.

With the loss, the Dutchmen fall to 3-8 on the season. They return to action tomorrow when they face the Oneonta Outlaws on the road before returning home Friday night to face the Outlaws again.
