Dutchmen Use Three Triples in 6-2 Win

By: Ryan Murphy

The Albany Dutchmen had two triples entering Sunday’s game with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles at Bob Bellizzi Field in Albany.

They now have five.

Three triples led the Dutchmen to a 6-2 win over Glens Falls, moving the Dutchmen to 6-1 on the season. Glens Falls fell to 4-4 on the young campaign.

The triples began in the fourth inning, with the game scoreless. Will Miller (College of the Albemarle) started the inning by crushing a triple over the head of Glens Falls center fielder Danny Oliveri (Triton). He scored on the next play, a sacrifice fly from Reid Matthews (Coastal Carolina).

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, when Teddy Cillis (UNC Wilmington) clubbed a home run to right field, scoring Garrett Bernardo (Anderson), who had started the inning with a single.

The Dutchmen did not trail for long. Cameron Miller (Baylor) and James Locklear (Rider) reached base on a walk and single respectively to begin the bottom half. Ryan Toomey (Georgetown) went opposite field, drilling a triple over the head of the Glens Falls right fielder and scoring Miller and Locklear.

The third and final triple came in the seventh inning, when Danny Hrbek (Radford) pulled a ball to right field, bringing Cameron Miller to the plate and giving Albany a 4-2 lead.

The scoring ended in the bottom of the eighth inning, on a two-run error with two outs. Cameron Miller popped a two-out pitch high to third base, which bounced off the webbing off the Glens Falls fielder. Josh Lee (Lipscomb) and Nick Jewett (Trinity University) scored on the play, giving the Dutchmen the 6-2 advantage that proved to be the final score.

Jake Welch (Notre Dame College) earned his second win of the season for Albany, tossing the first six innings of the contest. Welch surrendered just the two runs on the home run, striking out three hitters and walking just one.

AJ Flores (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and single-handedly pitched the Dutchmen out of a jam in the eighth. With two runners on and no outs, Flores struck out the next three hitters to end the inning and maintain Albany’s 4-2 lead.

The final inning was hurled by Tyler Fries (Wilmington). Fries got a big defensive play to work the scoreless inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Oliveri singled to left. Sean Aspinall (Azusa Pacific), who had come on as a defensive replacement for Toomey, fired a strike to Demetrius Webb at the plate, and Webb applied the tag to cut down Colton Montgomery (Georgia College). Fries got the next hitter to pop out to Webb to end the game.

Jack Fowler (Felician) was charged with the loss, his first decision of the season.

The Dutchmen embark on a two game roadtrip, taking on Glens Falls on Monday and battling the Utica Brewers on Tuesday. Albany returns home on Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Watertown Rams. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5:05.

Wednesday is High School Student Athlete Recognition Night, sponsored by New York State Public High School Athletic Association. High school student athletes from across the area will be recognized. The Dutchmen will also run Twitter and Facebook promotions as part of Web Wednesday.
