All-Around Showing Give Dutchmen VictoryBy: Jason Palatsky The Albany Dutchmen (19-17) defeated the Oneonta Outlaws (19-15) Wednesday night by a final score of 4-2. The victory was an all-around performance, as the offense scored four runs and provided plenty of opportunities for themselves as the pitching held the Outlaw offense down. Oneonta would score first in the bottom of the first, as Taylor Maxey (Chattanooga State College) led off with a single, and after going to third off a Yale Hughes (West Liberty University) single would score on a Jimmy Hand (Northeastern University) sacrifice fly. Albany, however, would quickly tie the game, doing so in the top of the second. Anthony Forte (Tulane University) would lead off with a walk, and after stealing second would move up to third on a error. He would score on the second sacrifice of the game, as Bray Curreri (College of Saint Rose) would fly out deep into right, allowing Forte to score and tie the game. The offenses would be held hitless until the top of the fifth, when the visitors would break that slump. Jon Skidmore (Dallas Baptist University) would single with one out, and after stealing second would come around to score on a Jack Gethings (Fairfield University) bomb of a triple, giving the visitors the 2-1 lead. Albany would add on to that lead in their next at-bats, as after John Novenche (Canisius College) singled with one out and moved up to third on a pair of wild pitches, would score on a RBI infield single from Forte. The Dutchmen would then load the bases still with only one out, but a fielder’s choice would get Forte out at the plate. JJ Shimko (University of South Carolina Upstate) would make sure he would not leave the bases loaded however, as he singled to score Brent Alford (Augusta University) and give the Dutchmen a 4-1 lead after the top of the 6th. Throughout the whole time, 2016 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star and Dutchmen starter Evan Giles (Indiana State University) was dominating on the mound, keeping the Oneonta offense hitless from the bottom of the second until the bottom of the sixth, where the runner wouldn’t get past first. Giles six inning start would give him Player of the Game acknowledgment, as he kept the opponent offense quiet allowing only the run and three hits, while walking only two and striking out six. Oneonta’s only other run of the ballgame would come in the top of the 8th, as Cameron Coons (Alvernia University) doubled with two outs and scored on a Chandler Engel (Wofford University) double of his own. Carter Austin (University of Massachusetts Amherst) would single to follow and go to second on the throw home, but Jack Owens (Bryant University) would come on and retire pinch hitter and PGCBL All-Star Quin Cotton (Grand Canyon University) on only one pitch. Troy Montemayor (Baylor University) would come on to pitch the 9th, and after allowing a leadoff double would strike out the next three Outlaw hitters to end the ballgame. Gethings would finish 2-for-4 with a walk and his RBI triple, and Forte would wrap with a final line of 1-for-2 with two walks, a run, and a RBI. Alford and Skidmore each finished 1-for-4 with a run apiece. Oneonta hits the road tomorrow night, visiting Jamestown to face the Jammers at 7:00. Albany will play the final game of a 16-game stretch, when they visit the Glens Falls Dragons for a 7:00 match at East Field.
