Derrick Armstrong, Mississippi State OF

By: Dutchmen Front Office

The Mississippi State outfielder is a former three time all district prospect who earned All-State and District MVP honors as a senior in high school. He then spent two years at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee where he proceeded to impress in all facets of the game for a 30+ win team.

The 5’8” right-hand hitter did his most obvious damage as an offensive player, hitting .391 as a freshman and .404 as a sophomore, good for tops on the team. In his sophomore season he also collected 63 hits, five triples, four home runs, scored 48 runs, drove in 56 more, and stole 17 bases in just as many attempts. It was a solid season and a perfect way to build on a freshman campaign in which he clubbed three home runs and nine doubles to drive in 22 runs, while stealing 23 bases and scoring 41 times.

However, Armstrong also made his presence felt on the defensive side of the game. He collected eight outfield assists and played error free baseball in 114 chances. All of which added to why he was such a highly sought-after prospect for the Bulldogs. This season, the transfer has appeared in twelve games for the 13th-ranked team in the country. Mississippi State has started off the year 17-2 and has been ranked as high as 3rd for much of the seasonr.  Armstrong has collected a .250 batting average and .471 on-base percentage, while knocking in seven runs and stealing three bases.

His compact swing and base running prowess make him a threat on offense, but his speed and instincts in the field are where he might be more important to the Dutchmen. Sitting behind home plate, the Albany fans will learn to feel pretty confident when Armstrong is roaming the vast green space out in Bellizzi Field.
