Amsterdam Tops Albany in a High Scoring ThrillerBy: Josh Richardson Back to Back games for the Albany Dutchmen end in the same fashion: Heartbreaking losses to the Amsterdam Mohawks. Losing via the Walk-Off on a Bryce Hubbard RBI single on Tuesday, the Mohawks followed that up coming down to Dutchmen field taking the victory in a rollercoaster 9-8 game. The scoring began early in this game, with Amsterdam tagging Ryan Bates (Binghamton) and Derek Duval (Post University) with one run each in the second and third innings. Mason Swinney (Alabama) was able to drive in Luke Longo (NJIT) in the second, while Cam Gurney (Utah) brought in the first of his three RBIs in the third.
The scoring would pause until the bottom of the fifth inning where the Dutchmen came out of the dugout ready to attack. After three batters reached to load the bases, Joe Karpierz (Xavier) grounded into a fielder’s choice reaching first base safely and scoring a run. That was followed up by four RBIs from four different players, with Mike Talevera (Southern Connecticut St), Josh Foglia (HVCC), Vince Venditti (St. Rose), and Anthony Paskell (Rider) all bringing in teammates. Albany stormed back to take the lead 5-2.
Shortly thereafter, Amsterdam did not go away, responding with a 6-spot in the sixth innings, extending their lead to 8-5 with RBIs from Jalen DeBose (FAU), Mason Swinney (Alabama), Alex Irizarry (Maryland), Carlos Martinez (Pittsburgh), and Cam Gurney (Utah).
After a scoreless sixth, Albany put up three more runs in the seventh to tie the game 8-8. Foglia added to his RBI total with a single and Anderson Moreno (SNHU) had a 2RBI single, scoring Foglia and Venditti.
With the game tied with two innings to play, Cam Gurney struck once again, with an RBI single to break the tie for good, putting Amsterdam ahead 9-8. Jack Seppings (Brown) would come in for the six out save, and would put away the Dutch, ending the game and adding another victory to the Mohawks tally.
Amsterdam improves to 20-1 on the season, with the Dutchmen falling now to 6-13. Albany will be back here tomorrow night for a doubleheader, when they will take on the Mohawk Diamond Dawgs. First pitch scheduled for 5:00. |
